National Council of Churches H1N1 (Swine Flu) and Seasonal Flu Best Practices for Congregations

News
Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health…3 John 1:2a NRSV

Pastors and congregational leaders can play an important role as we move more fully into flu season.  Health officials advise extra precautions with the prospect of both seasonal flu and the H1N1 flu virus (swine flu) upon us.

Pastors and congregational leaders might take the time now to talk with custodial staff, secretarial staff, and governing boards about:

ordering and stocking extra hygiene supplies, including facial tissues, hand soap, paper towels, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, antibacterial cleaning supplies, and additional waste receptacles with closed lids.

checking that hand washing facilities, either sinks with soap and water or hand sanitizer dispensers, are adequate and working properly.

cleaning frequently restrooms, handrails, doorknobs, bathroom sink taps, flush toilet handles, and all surface areas touched by many people.

removing candy dishes or filling candy dishes with individually wrapped candies.

Faith Letter to Senate

NewsNovember 18, 2009

Dear Senator:

Our organizations, as well as communities of faith at all levels of our society, have supported  comprehensive health care reform for decades. As providers of services and care, our members,  congregations and institutions are very familiar with the impact our current health care system  has on individuals and their families, particularly vulnerable populations such as low-income  individuals, women, children and the elderly.

We are pleased that the U.S. Congress has answered the call for health care reform and is  working diligently to expand health care availability to all Americans. We look to the Senate at  this important juncture to keep to a vision of comprehensive health care reform that is affordable,  accessible, inclusive and accountable.

Thousands of Children, Parents and Child Advocates Converge on the Nation's Capitol

NewsWashington, DC – Thousands of children, parents, grandparents, faith leaders and other child advocates took their walking shoes and baby strollers to the U.S. Capitol today to demand that Congress ensure pending health reform legislation meets the needs of the 8.1 million uninsured children―and millions more who are underinsured―before the process is over. The Champions for Children’s Health Stroller Brigade was led by Marian Wright Edelman, President of the Children’s Defense Fund, who welcomed Senator Bob Casey’s (D-PA) announcement that he would offer a "children’s amendment" when the health reform bill goes to the Senate floor to ensure that children will not be left out or left behind.

Joint letter to Majority Leader Reid on affordability in merger

News

October 30, 2009

Dear Majority Leader Reid,

The success of health reform depends on making health coverage and care affordable for the millions of low-wage working families who make up the bulk of the uninsured.  The majority of people who will come to rely on subsidized coverage in the Exchange have incomes below 250% of the FPL, about $46,000 for a family of three.  In Nevada, 300,000 people, six out of every ten people in the state who are uninsured, fall within this income range.  These families often find themselves struggling to make ends meet, let alone afford thousands of dollars in health costs.

Containing Costs and Avoiding Tax Increases While Improving Quality: Affordable Coverage and High Value Care

News October 22, 2009

 Executive Summary

The National Coalition on Health Care’s recommendations represent the consensus view of its 85 member organizations and are grounded in the understanding that America’s health system is on an unsustainable course. The Coalition questions why -- when we have a health care system that is projected to waste an estimated $10 trillion over the next ten years –are we raising taxes to pay for reform rather than focusing on better utilization of the money already in the system?
